Better machine tool performance on offer by application-specific CNC specialist

NUM Corporation is demonstrating its latest-generation CNC solutions for machining and tool grinding at this year’s International Manufacturing Technology Show. The company has a
large 1100 square feet booth at the show – it is celebrating 24 years of success in the USA – ways of enhancing the performance of machine tools and increasing brand identity are key highlights of NUM's booth at IMTS 2012. These attributes stem from the scalability and customization possibilities of the company's advanced Flexium CNC kernel. The company will also announce a large number of technical advances spanning its entire CNC range, from the CNC kernel and HMI, through its specialist drives and motors, to the company's well-known simulation software.
NUM is one of the only CNC companies in the world that is in a position to combine the flexibility of a scalable CNC system – such as its powerful Flexium CNC platform capable of controlling over 200 axes – with motors and drives that it develops and manufactures in-house. This capability, backed by extensive engineering resources, enables NUM to produce custom solutions for special purpose machine builders, as well as competitive standard products for high volume OEMs.
IMTS 2012
The NUM exhibition booth – E-5135 – is located in the center of the Controls & CAD-CAM Pavilion, in the East Building. It will be manned throughout the 6-day event by professional engineering staff, who will be delighted to take the opportunity to discuss how NUM can help improve the performance of customers’ manufacturing machines.

NUM is building

It's Teufen and Bühler production sites are being merged.

After having celebrated its 50-year CNC-technology anniversary last year, the NUM Group held the ground-breaking ceremony for the new logistics and service centre for the NUM Group in Teufen on 20 August, 2012. The newly built centre is being constructed next door to company headquarters in Battenhusstrasse 16. This building was built by NUM in 1991, which also moved in the same year. The three-storey new building, with a floor space totalling 8009 m2, will be completed by the autumn of 2013. The investment volume totals around CHF 8 million. The new building will provide better working conditions for the new jobs created in 2008 and 2009, and will help optimise work processes. The existing logistics centre in Bühler will therefore be relocated to premises of its own in Teufen. By merging the two production locations, work and logistics processes can be standardised, allowing costs to be saved as well.
The first sod was turned by the company Hörler Tiefbau AG, together with Mr. Peter von Rüti, president and CEO of the NUM Group and Mr. Klaus Rempfler, project manager and vice president of the NUM Group, which planned the entire construction process and will be monitoring the project together with the architect Mr. Jürg Stieger and Mr. Markus Pichler (site management) from the architectural agency Forrer Krebs Ley St. Gallen. The new building will be constructed according to the latest developments in energy-efficient construction. There are plans to realise the entire heating for the building using geothermal probes, extending down to a depth of at least 170 m. A photovoltaic array on the roof will also produce electricity. The planned capacity of the photovoltaic system totals around 70 kW, which will cover approx. 50% of the power required at the Teufen production site. The NUM Group has already installed a photovoltaic system boasting a capacity of 170 kW at its production site in Italy, providing further proof of the company's environmentally-friendly commitment. To keep the emissions from loading and unloading trucks to a minimum for local residents and visitors to the Paracelsus Clinic, and to ensure the space available is used optimally, the loading ramp was built on the south side of the premises, behind the existing NUM building. By setting the new building back from the street, the visual impression it makes fits in with the landscape and adjacent buildings very well.

NUMROTO - 25 years’ innovation

25 years’ innovation in tool grinding software – NUM announces next step.

NUM was celebrating 25 years’ continuous growth and development of its renowned NUMROTO tool grinding software at GrindTec 2012. The company intends marking the occasion by launching a suite of enhancements for the package, including a major new facility that effectively automates production verification.

NUM has also enhanced the ‘measurement in process’ capabilities of NUMROTO by extending the number and type of measurements that can be performed during grinding operations. Typically, operators can now maintain tolerances to within ±3 microns, even when producing a wide range of tools that may involve as many as 15 different measurements. The software also now features an XML data interface, enabling tool geometry parameters such as length, diameter, rake angle, relief information and many others to be exported for use in other programs, or imported from a customer’s database to shorten the design-to-production path.

First launched in 1987, NUMROTO software has become the preferred choice for many of the world’s leading manufacturers of machines for the production and resharpening of tools such as end-mills, drills, step drills, form cutters and many others.

Compared to some competitive products on the market, the software provides a much more direct and efficient path between tool design and manufacture. Featuring an integrated modelling-simulation-interpolation chain, NUMROTO avoids the sequential CAD-to-CAM and CAM-to-CNC translation phases of conventional software approaches and provides a true WYSIWYG output. This helps users of tool grinding machinery sidestep multiple data format changes and emulations, and eliminates the need for a pre-production optimisation phase.

NUM’s stand at GrindTec 2012 was the first port of call for visitors wishing to see the future of CNC machine tool automation. Five engineers, each equipped with a computer workstation, have been on hand to demonstrate the advantages of NUMROTO software and answer customers’ questions.

The 11th China International Machine Tool Show took place in Beijing from 6th to 11th April 2009. The CIMT is the largest metalworking exhibition in China.

NUM could be found in Hall W1, Stand E120, where it invited visitors with an open stand,
bright and 52 m2 large. Alongside the established NUM systems, NUMROTO was also present at the stand with its innovative software for the tool-grinding industry.
NUM CIMT 2009

Visitors were treated to a live demonstration, on two technical wall panels, of the two complete CNC systems, Flexium 6 and Flexium 68. The new axis motors from the BHX series round off the product range of NUM motors and are distinguished both by their favourable price/performance ratio as well as their very compact dimensions.

There were also some very interesting contacts and enquiries made regarding new products from the NUMROTO group.

The large number of visitors and the great interest shown serve to underline that the Chinese market still offers numerous prospects for NUM. It gives the group new impetus to develop this market further.

The CIMT is one of the four most well-known machine tool exhibitions in the world. 1,100 exhibitors from more than 28 countries and regions of the world make it an important venue for presenting a company’s latest achievements to the international public.
