NUM at IMTS 2012
Booth # E-5135 in the East Building
Better machine tool performance on offer by application-specific CNC specialist
NUM Corporation is demonstrating its latest-generation CNC solutions for machining and tool grinding at this year’s International Manufacturing Technology Show. The company has a
large 1100 square feet booth at the show – it is celebrating 24 years of success in the USA – ways of enhancing the performance of machine tools and increasing brand identity are key highlights of NUM's booth at IMTS 2012. These attributes stem from the scalability and customization possibilities of the company's advanced Flexium CNC kernel. The company will also announce a large number of technical advances spanning its entire CNC range, from the CNC kernel and HMI, through its specialist drives and motors, to the company's well-known simulation software.
NUM is one of the only CNC companies in the world that is in a position to combine the flexibility of a scalable CNC system – such as its powerful Flexium CNC platform capable of controlling over 200 axes – with motors and drives that it develops and manufactures in-house. This capability, backed by extensive engineering resources, enables NUM to produce custom solutions for special purpose machine builders, as well as competitive standard products for high volume OEMs.
The NUM exhibition booth – E-5135 – is located in the center of the Controls & CAD-CAM Pavilion, in the East Building. It will be manned throughout the 6-day event by professional engineering staff, who will be delighted to take the opportunity to discuss how NUM can help improve the performance of customers’ manufacturing machines.

After having celebrated its 50-year CNC-technology anniversary last year, the NUM Group held the ground-breaking ceremony for the new logistics and service centre for the NUM Group in Teufen on 20 August, 2012. The newly built centre is being constructed next door to company headquarters in Battenhusstrasse 16. This building was built by NUM in 1991, which also moved in the same year. The three-storey new building, with a floor space totalling 8009 m2, will be completed by the autumn of 2013. The investment volume totals around CHF 8 million. The new building will provide better working conditions for the new jobs created in 2008 and 2009, and will help optimise work processes. The existing logistics centre in Bühler will therefore be relocated to premises of its own in Teufen. By merging the two production locations, work and logistics processes can be standardised, allowing costs to be saved as well.
The first sod was turned by the company Hörler Tiefbau AG, together with Mr. Peter von Rüti, president and CEO of the NUM Group and Mr. Klaus Rempfler, project manager and vice president of the NUM Group, which planned the entire construction process and will be monitoring the project together with the architect Mr. Jürg Stieger and Mr. Markus Pichler (site management) from the architectural agency Forrer Krebs Ley St. Gallen. The new building will be constructed according to the latest developments in energy-efficient construction. There are plans to realise the entire heating for the building using geothermal probes, extending down to a depth of at least 170 m. A photovoltaic array on the roof will also produce electricity. The planned capacity of the photovoltaic system totals around 70 kW, which will cover approx. 50% of the power required at the Teufen production site. The NUM Group has already installed a photovoltaic system boasting a capacity of 170 kW at its production site in Italy, providing further proof of the company's environmentally-friendly commitment. To keep the emissions from loading and unloading trucks to a minimum for local residents and visitors to the Paracelsus Clinic, and to ensure the space available is used optimally, the loading ramp was built on the south side of the premises, behind the existing NUM building. By setting the new building back from the street, the visual impression it makes fits in with the landscape and adjacent buildings very well.

NUM enjoyed great success at the TIMTOS trade fair in Taipei, Taiwan – the first time the company has taken part with its own stand in the Swiss Pavilion.
The TIMTOS 2011, which saw 895 companies from all over the globe present products and services in the field of the state-of-the-art production technology, has now ended. The biannual trade fair attracted more than 35,500 visitors and is increasingly becoming a focal point for purchasing managers from all over the world.
NUM presented the latest generation of its CNC solutions – the Flexium system. In addition, our customers and other interested parties could take a look at the wide scope of “tailor-made” solutions from NUM, such as NUMROTO and NUMgear as well as special solutions for the Asian market.
During the six-day trade fair, local and international engineers under the direction of Adrian Kiener, NUM NTC Manager in Taiwan, were on-hand to advise at the NUM stand. They discussed numerous interesting, new possibilities with existing customers as well as potential new customers and partners. Another exceptionally positive result were the great many international visitors to the NUM stand who were most interested in our versatile CNC solutions.
Overall, we were delighted to find that we could exceed our expectations with regard to our participation at the TIMTOS 2011.

Vice Governor Sujun Feng, of the Government of Zhonglou District Changzhou City, visits the NUM headquarters in Switzerland.
A high ranked delegation of the People’s Government Zhonglou District Changzhou City, lead by the Vice Governor Sujun Feng, visited the NUM headquarters in Teufen, Switzerland. The reason for the visit is plans to further expand the agreed investment into a new technology park in Changzhou City.
With this latest expansion on the Chinese marked, NUM is able to enlarge its service and support towards the big and very fast growing Chinese industry. NUM already has more than a decade of successful experience in China as is present with 8 offices in the major industrial areas.

The new Zhonglou Manufacturing Industry Park in Changzhou City will provide over 320’000 m2 for software development companies and will when completed have over 5000 employees of which more than 1000 will be high level software engineers. NUM was one of the first companies to invest and to locate offering in this new industrial park, and plans to make utilize the openness of the NUM CNC control to develop tailored CNC and HMI solutions together with the OEM’s with a high level of local content. This will also enable a faster expansion of the office in the south of China.

Novel new tool head design for cutting machinery slashes the cost of migrating to 3D movement
Novel new tool head design for cutting machinery slashes the cost of migrating to 3D movement
Today at EMO 2009, the CNC vendor NUM is launching an innovative ready-integrated pan-and-tilt tool head solution for sophisticated plasma, laser and waterjet cutting machinery applications. Called NUMcut, it provides a very simple means of extending the capability of machinery from 2D to 3D applications, with precise multi-axis interpo-lation.
The package includes a new tool head design that brings many tech-nical advantages to the cutting machinery sector. A novel mechanical design provides the versatility of movement and stiffness required to implement precision cutting motion, but with the unique advantages of very low mass, and the elimination of cabling runs that need to flex with the tool head movement. Due to its unusually low weight, the new head offers a very simple upgrade path for CNC machines in the cut-ting machinery market.
The NUMcut tool head employs gimbals and the Cardan universal joint to convert the movement of two linear actuators into 360 degrees of panning motion plus control of tilt angle up to 47 degrees.
Com-bined with the conventional three-axis X-Y-Z movement of the under-lying cutting machine, NUMcut offers machine builders a simple means of migrating machinery to sophisticated three-dimensional per-formance.
A simpler and smaller version of the tool head offering con-trol of tilt angle up to 8 degrees is also being made available, to allow machine builders to compensate for the taper of plasma or waterjet beams. This variant is considerably smaller, allowing multiple tools to be mounted if required.
