The profile insert is not ground in the milling head, instead it is ground in a production clamping system, which is dimensionally different. The profile to be produced by the milling cutter is designed with the profile editor or imported if available.
The insert position is described with diameter (circle of flight), rake angle, shear angle, how the insert is mounted on the milling head. A distorted profile is ground on the cutting edge of the insert.
The profile of the insert is calculated by clamping system transformations from the original position of the insert in the milling head to the position of the insert during grinding in the production clamping system.
After grinding, the insert is clamped in the cutter head. The profile to be produced is then geometrically correct.
With this process, profile inserts can be ground for any milling head diameter and freely selectable radial/axis angle with a production clamping system. Even inaccuracies in the milling head can be corrected with the clamping system transformation if required.
